Period Missing? Why It Doesn’t Surprise Me with a Diet Like This

If your period has been missing for longer than three months, please have it checked by a doctor, for example your gynecologist. This article does not replace a diagnosis. And if you are struggling with an eating disorder, medical and therapeutic support belong in it. I’d love to help you as well.
You eat a balanced diet, pay attention to protein and exercise regularly, and yet your period is missing or your cycle is unpredictable? Then it is worth taking a close look at your everyday life, because to get your period back, your body needs more than a supposedly healthy diet.
I know this pattern not only from my clients, but from my own story. For a long time I thought: I eat healthy and enough, I follow all the hormone tips, I eat protein, fats and carbs, and I do not overdo it with exercise.
And still the questions remained: Why is my cycle missing? Why is it so irregular? And why does the uncertainty come back every month, whether it will come and whether I even ovulated?
I was convinced I ate intuitively. In fact, I was trying to control everything, because I wanted to do everything right.
I am Lina, a state-certified nutrition consultant, health coach for women’s health and an expert in cycle loss. In this article I take apart a typical day with you, just as I keep seeing it while supporting more than 250 women.
What to expect
- A completely normal day: stress before the day begins
- Breakfast only two and a half hours after getting up
- Salad, protein bar, veggie stir-fry: why it is not enough
- Three things you are allowed to understand
- Why your body switches off your cycle
- My story: from tons of vegetables to intuitive eating
- If your plate looks like this, it is worth a closer look
A completely normal day: stress before the day begins
Picture a typical morning: you wake up at five and already feel tense inside. The first glance goes to your phone, and in your head you sort through the day’s to-dos.
Work starts at eight, food has to fit in somewhere, and the gym is on the plan too. You still need to get the protein pudding for Ingrid, and Herbert is coming for dinner. The only question: what are you going to cook?
Then the trip to the bathroom. Cycle day 28, and no period in sight. Or it already came on cycle day 20 and is long over. Or once again there is only spotting, and the question remains whether your period will come at all.
Sometimes another 60 days pass without it starting.
If your morning starts like this, the first reason is already found: your stress system is running at full speed before you have eaten anything.
Breakfast only two and a half hours after getting up
Your workout is planned, your food is packed, and your workday starts at seven thirty. Only now, two and a half hours after getting up, do you eat for the first time.
On the table there is a bowl of chia protein pudding with a few berries. That is your breakfast.
Two things stand out to me. First, this breakfast comes very late, even though the morning is exactly when you can actively support your hormones and your cycle.
After waking up, your stress hormone cortisol is at its highest so that you become alert and ready to perform. A breakfast signals to your body: we are safe. Why coffee instead of breakfast becomes a problem is also explained in my article on the 5 cycle killers.
Second, the chia pudding is more of a starter than a complete meal.
👣 Your first step
Eat breakfast earlier, ideally 30–60 minutes after getting up. And pimp your chia pudding: add nuts or nut butter and ideally a small source of carbohydrates.
Salad, protein bar, veggie stir-fry: why it is not enough
At lunch there is a salad with tofu, in between a protein bar at the office and maybe a few nuts.
After work you train consistently, and in the evening there is an apple and a big veggie stir-fry.
With a day like this, it is no wonder your period is missing. You are not only lacking nutrients and energy, but on many levels also the resources your body needs for a cycle.

Three things you are allowed to understand
Regardless of whether you are at a normal weight and whether you struggle with your eating: if your cycle is irregular or missing, these three connections will help you.
- Without enough energy, your period will not simply come back. Your body needs enough food energy and nutrients, otherwise it lacks the basis for a cycle.
- Protein alone is not automatically hormone-friendly. So Ingrid urgently needs to eat something else with her protein pudding.
- Vegetables fill your stomach, but they do not nourish you enough. Stretch receptors in the stomach and certain messenger substances do signal fullness, but your body registers, among other things through your blood sugar, that too little energy has arrived.
You cannot fool your body. A full stomach does not mean you are sufficiently nourished.
Some women may even need to eat beyond their hunger for a while to learn again what real fullness feels like. That is scary at first, but you will not regret it once you notice how much better you can now work together with your body.
Why your body switches off your cycle
It is a fallacy to believe your body would keep your cycle running under all circumstances. If it gets too little energy, its assessment is: there is not enough for a second life. The answer to the question of a cycle is then clear: no.
Instead, it turns down every function that is not immediately vital for survival. You notice it like this, for example:
- Your digestion is throttled, which is why you are bloated.
- Your thyroid runs on low power, which is why you feel weak, tired and exhausted.
- Your stress hormones stay elevated all the time, because your body is in fight-or-flight mode.
- Your blood sugar gets out of balance, which is why you get cravings: your body wants to mobilize energy.
By the way, your body can make carbohydrates itself, through a process called gluconeogenesis. So it is definitely smart not to neglect any nutrient, to spare your body the extra stress of converting one into another.
Why should it keep these non-vital functions running if the energy is not even enough for you?
Too little energy, carbs, fats, protein, love, trust, emotional support, resources and breaks. Too much healthy control, volume eating, inner tension and pressure.
So it is not only about what you eat and when. It is about how you nourish yourself on every level.

To the free Cycle Clarity CallMy story: from tons of vegetables to intuitive eating
I know what it feels like to want to do everything right and still never arrive. For years my plate looked like a meticulously planned vegetable patch: vegetables for breakfast, vegetables before every meal, vegetables with every meal.
In my head, an inner Excel sheet was running nonstop, rating every bite.
I was often admired for my discipline – nobody saw that I felt more like a phone in battery-saver mode: I did manage to get out of bed in the morning, but by lunchtime my battery was already empty again and my mood was at rock bottom.
Of course, I too eventually got the receipt for my “healthy lifestyle”. Thyroid problems, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and on top of that not only the loss of my period, but also problems with my kidney and my heart. My body was no longer a home, but a permanent construction site.
Today I have been eating intuitively for many years and need neither hormone replacement therapy nor a strict training plan. I wake up full of energy, eat freely without calculating in my head, and my body feels like my home again. Here you can read more about my story.
That is why I want to leave you with an honest question: what is your control costing you right now, and is it really worth it to you?
I know what it is like to be stuck, because I stood exactly at this point myself. That is exactly why I now support women out of hormone chaos and back to their cycle.
We do not only look at the symptoms, but at why your hormone system keeps sounding the alarm.
If your plate looks like this, it is worth a closer look
If your diet consists mainly of low-fat quark, a bit of protein, tofu, vegetables, salad and bars, it is time to take a closer look. If you are coming out of an eating disorder, my article on gaining weight in recovery explains why this path feels so hard at first.
I would love to look at it together with you, not only at your plate, but at you as a woman. At FemBaLina we work holistically.
Feel free to tell me on Instagram what your diet looks like right now. I look forward to your message.
